Iris Satellite’s Flight Software and Onboard Computer Leader

Iris Satellite

During 2018-2021, I was the Flight Software and Onboard Computer leader for Iris (a.k.a ManitobaSat), a 3U-sized CubeSat satellite developed and built by the University of Manitoba in collaboration with Canadian Space Agency, Nasa, and Magellan Aerospace. Iris was launched into space on Jan 2023 from the Nasa Kennedy Space Center via a SpaceX Falcon rocket.

In this project, I:

  • Designed the modular onboard computer based on a Smart Fusion 2 system on a chip (FPGA/Arm Cortex)
  • Developed custom real-time flight software running on FreeRTOS to control all the satellite’s operations such as attitude and determination control
  • Led the onboard computer team (CDH) for Iris
  • Led the flight software team for Iris
